Carlie (she/her/ella) was born and raised in rural New Mexico to a very proud Chicano family. Her family has lived in New Mexico for generations, making her deeply connected to the land and culture, and she hopes to give back to the community in a meaningful way one day. Carlie knows first-hand the importance of access to adequate water infrastructure and the impacts of living far from emergency aid. Having grown up in an environmental justice community, Carlie has made advocating for cultural rights and the ability to maintain the land one derives from a central part of her education and career.

Carlie began her academic career at the University of New Mexico (UNM), graduating with a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies, with a certificate in Peace Studies. At UNM, Carlie became a mentor to incoming first-year Latino students, helping them feel comfortable navigating their education and future careers. Carlie started two donation drives during her undergraduate years to provide academic materials to underserved students and gifts to children at the battered women’s shelter during the holidays. Her work experience includes assisting refugees entering the U.S. as they establish stable lives amid so much uncertainty. Carlie also advocated for farmworker rights and the rights of indigenous peoples around the world throughout her education. After graduating from UNM, Carlie pursued a year of professional development between her bachelor’s degree and Law School by joining AmeriCorps.

While with AmeriCorps Houston, she assisted with rebuilding homes affected by Hurricane Harvey and the Winter Storm of 2020. In doing so, she sparked a passion for developing policy to expand access to resilient infrastructure for environmental justice communities. To fuel that passion, she pursued a JD at Lewis & Clark Law School. While earning her JD, she also pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Portland State University to gain the knowledge needed to successfully run a nonprofit to support individuals and families affected by climate change. During those four years, Carlie worked to address farmworker issues through Legal Aid Services of Oregon and pushed for resilient infrastructure efforts at a local grocer in Portland, OR. After Carlie graduated with her JD/MBA in May of 2026, she began studying to take the Bar exam in July of 2026 before embarking on her new adventure in Washington, D.C., through CHCI.

As a CHCI Law Postgraduate Fellow, Carlie aims to leverage her legal education and experience in the philanthropy sector to better serve CHCI. She looks forward to embracing her passion for building up the Chicano community by gaining skills in policymaking and better understanding the legislative process.
