Jesse Lopez, hailing from California’s Central Valley, is openly gay, a first-generation Mexican American, and a lifelong public servant. He was born in Reedley and was raised in Southeast Fresno as one of eight siblings. As a child, Jesse experienced housing instability and food insecurity while growing up in an environment surrounded by substance abuse and gang violence. Jesse struggled academically early on, particularly with reading and writing. After being diagnosed with dyslexia in eighth grade, he sought the support he needed and worked diligently to overcome those challenges. His upbringing exposed him to the realities of poverty, inequality, and the barriers many working families face. Those experiences became the foundation of his commitment to public service and expanding opportunities for others. Growing up in a predominantly Latino community, he witnessed both the resilience of immigrant families and the systemic inequities that limited economic mobility and access to quality education. These experiences shaped his belief that government is most effective when it reflects and serves the diverse communities it represents.

Jesse earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Certificate in Global Studies from California State University, Fresno. Through international exchange, he sought opportunities to expand his understanding of public policy and global governance. He spent six months in Costa Rica, where he explored sustainable development, environmental conservation, and community-based governance, including cultural immersion in the Maleku and Bribri Indigenous Territories. Two years later, he studied in Madrid, Spain, studying comparative politics, Spanish foreign policy, European governance, and international relations

Professionally, Jesse worked two years at the Mexican Consulate in Fresno, and a year at Fresno State’s Parent University, an educational non-profit. Most recently, he served as an Executive Assistant/Legislative Aide to California State Senator Sabrina Cervantes after beginning his Capitol career as a Sacramento Semester Legislative Intern. He led and staffed SB 1379, establishing an independent Office of the Medical Examiner in Riverside County to improve transparency and accountability in death investigations. Jesse is also an alumnus of New Leaders Council Sacramento and a member of Global Shapers Sacramento, where he advances civic engagement and community leadership.

As the CHCI Public Policy Fellow placed in the Office of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, Jesse hopes to broaden his understanding of the federal legislative process while strengthening his skills in policy development, policy research, and leadership. He is particularly interested in immigration, labor and economic development, criminal justice, international affairs, and social justice. Jesse views the CHCI fellowship as an opportunity to learn from national leaders, expand his professional network, and prepare for a career in public service. In the future, he aspires to serve in the U.S. Foreign Service, advancing American diplomacy while continuing to advocate for Latino communities at home and abroad.
