Born in Maryland to Peruvian parents, Mikela Lazo began her third culture kid journey at just two years old when her family relocated to Guyana. She then spent most of her childhood in Nicaragua, later living in Argentina for three years and completing high school in El Salvador before moving to West Lafayette, Indiana to attend Purdue University. At Purdue, she is double majoring in Political Science and Public Relations & Strategic Communication, with a minor in Law & Society. She is also a proud member of the John Martinson Honors College. Her multicultural upbringing has shaped her deep appreciation for diverse perspectives, building community, and commitment to public service.
In her junior year of college, Mikela served as the Publications Intern for the Indiana House Democratic Caucus during the 2025 Legislative Session, gaining firsthand experience in political communication. She followed that experience by interning in the Community Outreach Division in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, where she strengthened her connection to the community and learned more about the legal system. Mikela is considering law school and hopes to pursue a career in communications or advocacy, particularly in areas related to education, immigration, healthcare, and criminal justice reform.
Through her CHCI Internship, Mikela hopes to learn from leaders in Washington, DC about the various challenges and realities Latinos face nationwide to become a stronger advocate for her community.
