CHCI Announces Gala Entertainment Featuring
Ozomatli
CHCI's 32nd Annual Award Gala will heat up on Wednesday, September 16 with internationally acclaimed urban-Latino-and-beyond collision group Ozomatli. In their 14 years together as a band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from being hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors.
CHCI is also pleased to announce this year's Mistress of Ceremonies, Maria Hinojosa, Senior PBS Correspondent for the acclaimed se ries NOW, the anchor and managing editor of NPR's Latino USA, and the anchor of her own Emmy Award winning talk show One on One with Maria Hinojosa from WGBH/La Plaza. Hinojosa has won top honors in American journalism including two Emmy's, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged, and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary for her groundbreaking piece Child Brides: Stolen Lives.
"The Gala honors and features Latinos in the arts who have not only made a lasting impression in the entertainment business, but who realize the importance of giving back to their community," said Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-12), CHCI Chair.
The 32nd Annual Awards Gala will be held at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center, with the theme, "Latinos Leading in the Arts." CHCI will recognize several Hispanic leaders not only for their professional accomplishments, but also for their commitment to community service.
Each year, the CHCI Annual Awards Gala is the hallmark event that launches Hispanic Heritage Month in Washington, D.C., and serves as the unifying event for the Hispanic American community. The Gala program each year is developed around a unifying theme that highlights CHCI, its mission and programs, the CHCI Medallion of Excellence honorees, and culminates with the grand finale presentation of the Chair's Award. This year CHCI Chair Nydia Velázquez presents the 2009 CHCI Lifetime Achievement Award to music icon Marc Anthony.
The 32nd Annual Awards Gala is hosted by CHCI's Legacy Partner, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
Join us on September 15 at the Warner Theatre for a night of laughter in support of Latino youth. Confirmed to perform are Greg Giraldo, Joey Medina, Rudy Moreno, Erik Rivera, and Christela Alonzo.
