CHCI Congressional Interns Wrap Up Their Summer Session
CHCI hosted the Congressional Interns' graduation ceremony at the Rayburn Building last week to celebrate the completion of eight weeks in Washington, D.C. The interns were joined by eight Members of Congress who praised the interns' work in their offices and shared words of encouragement.
This year's diverse internship class came from 16 different states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, represented 14 different majors, and most notably, 42 percent marked a milestone being the first in their families to attend college.
At the graduation, President & CEO Esther Aguilera spoke of the significance of the internship. "This program prepares these students to return to their communities armed with the leadership experience that enables them to take on new challenges and opportunities, and instills in them the commitment to create lasting and positive change."
Members of Congress Joe Baca (CA-43), Ben R. Lujan (NM-3), Grace Napolitano (CA-38), Ciro Rodriguez (TX-23), John T. Salazar (CO-23), and Jose Serrano (NY-16) join the interns, Esther Aguilera, and CIP sponsors Omar Vargas of PepsiCo Foundation and Robert Chiapetta of Toyota Motor North America for a photo. Cong. Xavier Becerra (CA-31), and Ruben Hinojosa (TX-15) were also present at the event.
For the first time ever, CHCI launched an online blogging contest allowing the interns to chronicle their experiences in Washington. The goal of the initiative was to highlight the CHCI internship experience, providing a glimpse of the participants' thoughts, interactions and activities. More than 15,000 votes were recorded through five entries and 58 responses, which you can still read by clicking here.
The contest winners were Armando Santiago and Cristobal Salinas who both received a round trip ticket from Southwest Airlines, the official airline of the Congressional Internship Program.
"Southwest Airlines is proud to expand its partnership with CHCI to become the official airline of the Congressional Internship Program, Public Policy Fellowship, and Graduate & Young Professional Fellowship," said Lidia S. Martinez, Manager, Corporate Community Affairs for Southwest Airlines. "We are also excited to participate in the first ever internship blog contest and provide round-trip airline tickets to the winners. After meeting with the interns and seeing first hand the quality of students and young professionals that CHCI works with, it's an honor to contribute to the success of the future leaders of our country.
