R2L Mentoring Power Hour

What is the Mentoring Power Hour?

One of the signature activities at Ready to Lead (R2L) events is the Mentoring Power Hour. The goal of the activity is for students to engage in a fluid conversation with mentors, discussing the mentor's personal success stories and learning ways to create their own. The Mentoring Power Hour is a one-hour activity where students and mentors interact to discuss challenges and obstacles that students may face. Mentors sit with a table of students and lead a conversation according to the discussion topics provided by CHCI. Every 15 minutes, mentors will rotate to a new table of students; mentors will meet with four different groups of students throughout the hour. Students are encouraged to ask questions and discuss their educational and career goals with their mentors.

Who should serve as a mentor?
CHCI seeks mentors in every city to participate in this impactful and engaging activity. Mentors at events represent a wide range of professional backgrounds from the local area. The goal is for students to see that people who come from backgrounds similar to theirs have gone on to become successful leaders in their communities; therefore, anyone who is comfortable sharing his or her educational and career path is welcome to participate.

During the 2013 event season, nearly 350 professionals and alumni participated in the Mentoring Power Hour sessions throughout the country. Our goal is to connect students with leaders from their communities in an effort to help empower students to create their own paths towards success. We encourage working professionals as well as college or graduate student volunteers to participate.

What impact can I have?
Your participation makes a difference! The Mentoring Power Hour is the higlight of every R2L event. The feedback from both students and mentors is overwhelmingly positive. In 2013, ninety-five percent of R2L participants said they felt more confident about graduating from high school after participating in the Mentoring Power Hour.
