Axel Herrera Ramos was born in Honduras and immigrated to the United States at the age of seven with his family. He currently calls Durham, North Carolina home and has developed a commitment to his local community through activism, mentorship, and civic involvement. As both a DACA recipient and first generation college student, he is passionate about issues surrounding immigration and access to higher education.
Axel is a Golden Door Scholar and a rising senior at Duke University majoring in Economics and Sociology. As a sophomore in college, he established the Duke Define American College Chapter that has brought the conversation about immigration in this country to the forefront of Duke’s students, faculty and administration. His leadership has enabled him to become a representative of student concerns amongst university administrators and work collaboratively on resolving issues of equity, resources, and access. He continues to give back to his community by mentoring middle school youth through a STEM enrichment program named BOOST.
As a CHCI intern, Axel hopes to gain up close personal experience of the legislative process to strengthen and complement his advocacy and organizing. This professional experience will allow him to expand his post-graduate opportunities, and he looks forward to building a strong relationship with fellow CHCI peers and co-workers that can become a great network for continuing his leadership in Duke, Durham, and beyond.
