Spring 2020 CHCI-Target Intern
Hometown: Lake Elsinore, California
School: California State University San Marcos
Major: Political Science
Placement: The Office of Rep. Ben Ray Luján
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Eduardo and his family moved to California in 2015 due to the economic crisis on the island. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria ravaged Puerto Rico in 2017, Eduardo quickly understood the critical role that the 5.5 million Puerto Ricans in the diaspora have of informing the American public about the historic struggles on the island. He got involved in political campaigns, grassroots organizations, and government work, in the United States and on the island, always striving to put Puerto Rico, and his identity as a member of the Puerto Rican diaspora, at the front and center of his work.
Eduardo is currently a third and final year student at California State University, San Marcos majoring in Political Science, and minoring in Ethnic Studies. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree, Eduardo hopes to go on to get a master’s degree in Public Administration with an emphasis on Public Policy at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. His ultimate career goal would be to hold a leadership position in Puerto Rico, working to solve the overwhelming amount of challenges the island faces due to its colonial status.
As a CHCI Intern, Eduardo hopes to continue gaining substantial knowledge of the legislative process, as well as insight into the strong power that Congress exercises over Puerto Rico. He hopes to be able to use this experience to make a difference on his island and inspire the millions of Puerto Ricans in the diaspora to do the same.
