1. What field of study do you intend to pursue if you receive the CHCI Scholarship? How will it benefit the Latino community?
My parents migrated to America with the same goal every immigrant has for their children, the opportunity to have a better life. They granted my siblings this and more. All of the hardships my family has endured runs through my veins and I am determined to tell their story. As a journalist, I will give a voice to my community.
Majoring in Journalism, I plan to inform society about important issues impacting the Latino community. With my writing skills, I am confident I will be able to attain this goal. With my strong foundation and determination, I am destined to be successful.
2. How Has the Scholarship Changed Your Life?
As the end of my first year at the University of California at Berkeley draws near, I realize just how much the scholarship has helped me and am thankful for the award. CHCI has allowed me to get lost in the possibilities and opportunities Cal has to offer and has motivated me to not only succeed academically, but also civically. I have a passion for programs which inform the Latino community and other minorities about college and scholarships.
CHCI has given me financial relief, allowing me to concentrate on my studies and volunteer work. In addition, it has also alleviated the burden and worry from my family’s shoulders. I attribute my success to CHCI, and in the future, with my PhD in hand; I will undoubtedly remember CHCI as being the stepping stone to my success.
