Jazmine Mercado was born in Chicago, Illinois. Raised by hard working parents from Ecuador and Puerto Rico, Jazmine saw the economic, social, and personal struggles they faced raising 5 children. Determined to provide a better future for her family, Jazmine became determined to achieve and give back regardless of any barriers brought her way.
Jazmine is a first-generation student at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, where she is studying Political Science and Sociology with a sub-plan in Law, Justice, and Social Change. She is the president of Leaders of Education, Advocacy, and Diversity (LEAD), an organization meant to build coalitions and foster dialogue among student of color on campus. She is also president of her sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc.
Upon graduation next spring, she hopes to attend law school and eventually move back to Chicago to serve her community. As a CHCI intern, Jazmine hopes to learn about the workings of a federal office and policies in order to advocate for her community.
