Juan Negrete was born and raised in the eastside neighborhood of Riverside, California. A working class and predominantly African American and Latino community, the eastside exposed Juan to the array of beauty and the harsh reality that comes with growing up in the barrio. These experiences molded his passions: family, community, education, civic engagement, and service.
Now a senior at the University of Southern California (USC), Juan continues to embody these values as a first generation-college student. Amid social, cultural, and economic differences, Juan has been able to succeed alongside his fellow USC classmates. During his tenure at USC, Juan has been a student law clerk with the LA County District Attorney’s Office, a program coordinator with the Joint Educational Project’s ReadersPLUS Program, the Philanthropy Director of the Trojan Knights, a college counselor with USC Troy Camp, and the Vice President of USC’s Mortar Board Chapter.
As a CHCI Intern, Juan intends to learn as much as possible. Washington, D.C. and Congress are the center of Juan’s career aspirations. Juan hopes that the leadership skills and networking opportunities presented through CHCI, coupled with an intense work ethic, will help him thrive in the D.C. environment. Upon graduating, Juan would like to utilize his skills by building a career in the field of public policy. Further down the road, Juan plans to continue his education and enroll in a joint J.D. /MPP program.
