Marlon Greatrex was born and raised in Guatemala. He came to the United States as a young teen, and quickly adapted to his new life in high school earning the Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Award for Leadership & Community Service. He has now worked in education for 12 years covering roles as Enrichment Program Leader, Outreach Coordinator, and College & Academic Counselor. He continued to serve and empower students and families of the South Los Angeles community working as a Student & Family Resource Specialist for Los Angeles Unified School District.
Marlon earned a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach in 2016. His commitment has inspired many students and their families, and through his work he helped hundreds of community members connect to resources and mentored them to advocate for themselves. On August 9th, 2018, Marlon was recognized by Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as the 2018 WASUP Honoree for his unwavering work with the community providing Health & Wellness awareness and resources. After completion of the fellowship program he plans to return to school for a doctorate in Public Policy & Management.
As a CHCI Education Fellow, Marlon hopes to learn more about education policy, its process as it pertains to K-12 education, and about federal and state academic budgets and their impact at the local level. He will take the experience gained in the fellowship program and continue to devote his work to the betterment of the Latino community.
