ICYMI: 2016 CHCI Capitol Hill Education Policy Briefing Series

On April 20, CHCI’s Graduate Education Fellows Alejandra Montoya-Boyer, Sara Garcia and Mateus Baptista, organized and moderated three public policy roundtable discussions comprised of members of Congress, congressional staff, public policy experts, and national leaders, tackling some of the most relevant educations issues affecting the Latino community.

CHCI-Secondary Education Graduate Fellow,Alejandra Montoya-Boyer, led an instructive discussion on the necessity of increasing access to computer and technology education for minority students. She was joined by Rep. Ben Ray Luján, who reiterated the need for a more technologically savvy and diverse workforce in his closing remarks. CHCI-Higher Education Fellow, Sara Garcia, focused on the issue of homelessness among Latino and minority students pursuing higher education and the need to provide them with the necessary support in order for them to pursue a productive college career. The briefings concluded with a conversation about the growing student loan crisis by CHCI-McDonald’s Higher Education Fellow Mateus Baptista. The briefing also observed the benefits and challenges of providing students with a loan discharge in bankruptcy courts.
