Monica Morales is the proud daughter of a Mexican-Indigenous single mother. Born and raised in Union City, New Jersey, she was shaped by her resilient and loving immigrant community. These experiences, along with her family’s history, have inspired her commitment to bridge the gap between those who are too often left out of policymaking and the institutions that shape their lives.  

Monica is a John Martinson Honors EDGE (Engage, Discover, Grow, Experience) student at Montclair State University, where she is pursuing a degree in Political Science with a minor in Pre-Law. As a Student Assistant for the Office of Student Belonging’s Advocacy & Outreach Center, she works to foster an inclusive and supportive campus community by advancing and facilitating dialogue on belonging. She has also volunteered with the Red Hawk Pantry and Rocky’s Closet, helping to address food and clothing insecurity among students.

Her professional experience includes internships with New Jersey Transit and the New Jersey Transit Police Department, where she served as a Legal Court Advocate Intern, as well as interning with Montclair State University’s Office of Government Relations. In these roles, she supported policy and legislative research, legal documentation, and court-related processes. Monica also studied abroad in London, where she examined the United Kingdom’s approach to sustainability and environmental policy.

As a CHCI Intern, Monica hopes to gain firsthand experience in the legislative and policymaking process and form lasting connections. She aspires to build a career in public service, higher education, and transportation policy, advancing opportunities that empower and connect communities.
