Congressional Intern, Presented by Visa
Hometown: Alexandria, Virginia
School: George Mason University
Major: Government and International Politics
Placement: Office of Rep. Joaquin Castro
Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Felipe Casas became the first in his family to pursue higher education in the United States at just 17 years old. Moving at a young age inspired his commitment to giving back to the Hispanic/Latino community in the U.S., where he found a sense of belonging.
Felipe is a Government and International Politics major at George Mason University, specializing in Comparative Politics. He has immersed himself in campus life, serving as President of the Latin Student Association, a prominent organization that unites, educates, and empowers over 3,000 student members. During his first year, Felipe also founded the university’s first and only Latin American political society to raise awareness about the ongoing and historical challenges facing his home region on campus. Felipe has accumulated valuable experience through internships at NGOs and international organizations, including the Organization of American States. He has also worked for his university’s Immigration Center and conducted academic research on democracy and judicial reforms in Latin America. He is determined to pursue graduate studies in international politics focusing on Latin America. He ultimately hopes to work for an international organization that fosters integral development and expands opportunities for all communities.
Felipe views this CHCI internship as a key opportunity to deepen his understanding of U.S. politics, foreign relations, and immigration issues. He sees this experience as essential to fostering meaningful progress for all communities.
