Itzel Ramirez was born and raised in the northside of Houston, Texas by parents who immigrated from Mexico, her father from Veracruz and her mother from Mexico City. Growing up she was deeply influenced by her family’s values for hard work, humility and perseverance. Her father’s emphasis on helping others and staying true to your roots inspired her commitment to creating opportunities through education and public service.

After spending a year in Pennsylvania studying at Washington and Jefferson College, Itzel decided to transfer, and is now a student at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she is a first-generation student double-majoring in Sociology and Political Science with a minor in Education. On campus, she is involved in Delta Theta Nu, the first multicultural sorority in the university, and has participated in research focused on LBGTQ+ youth and educational equity.

Itzel aims to pursue graduate studies in public policy and education, building a career dedicated to education reform. She is passionate about developing policies that address educational inequalities and create pathways for students from historically marginalized communities to succeed.

As a CHCI Intern, Itzel hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process and strengthen her ability to advocate effectively for both the Latino community and the LGBTQIA+ community. She looks forward to developing her public speaking skills, learning from Latino leaders in Congress, and building the tools needed to navigate policy spaces with confidence.
