Jorge Millan Merchan was born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised by his Colombian parents, who immigrated to the United States to pursue greater educational opportunities. As a first-generation American, his early childhood was spent regularly moving and watching his family navigate the complexities of the immigration process. This inspired Jorge to pursue a career as an immigration and civil rights attorney, to help other families overcome the inequities that exist in the U.S. immigration system.

Jorge is a student at Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a concentration in Law and Politics, and double minors in Public Policy and Public Administration. While at Georgia Southern, he has received international diplomacy and research awards as a member of the Model United Nations delegation and serves as the president of the campus Moot Court Association. He has previously worked as a policy assistant for the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, drafting policy memos for legislators on state and local issues. Jorge followed that experience with an internship in the office of Senator Jon Ossoff, helping constituents engage with federal agencies.

As a CHCI Intern, Jorge hopes to gain experience with the federal policymaking process and form connections with other advocates seeking to support and build up the Hispanic community. Jorge intends to bring the lessons learned from CHCI back to Georgia to support Hispanic advocacy groups in the Southeast.
