Valerie Mejia was born in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, by parents who immigrated from Honduras to create opportunities for their family. As the eldest of three daughters, she is the first in her family to attend college and pursue a legal career. Being raised by immigrant parents instilled in her the value of hard work and education, inspiring her to become involved in the Latino Pre-Law Society, where she encourages fellow Latino students to pursue higher education and civic engagement.

Valerie is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a College Park Scholars Medallion Recipient through the Justice and Legal Thought program, where she completed a research capstone examining Hispanic student outcomes and the impact of immigration policy on education in Montgomery County, Maryland. She has gained experience in local government through her internship with Montgomery County Councilmember Kate Stewart’s office. Valerie also volunteers at a citizenship naturalization workshop, where she provides Spanish-English interpretation support for citizenship applicants.

Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Valerie hopes to pursue a Master of Public Policy before attending law school. Her ultimate career goal is to become an attorney who expands access to legal services and advocacy for underrepresented communities.

As a CHCI Intern, Valerie hopes to strengthen her understanding of the legislative process, build connections with public servants, and develop the skills necessary to create positive change in her community and beyond.
