Yahir Fernandez-Alvarez grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and is the son of Mexican immigrants who came to the United States at a young age. As a first-generation college student, he recognizes the transformative potential of higher education and the doors it can open for individuals and their families.

Yahir is a QuestBridge Scholar and currently a student at Denison University, majoring in Religious Studies. Committed to making a difference for students like himself, Yahir has become involved in non-profit organizations, including Tyler’s House for Teens and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He also holds executive positions with La Fuerza Latina. Through those roles, he uplifts his community and creates spaces where underrepresented students feel supported. He continually strives to empower others, aiming to make a meaningful impact within his community. After completing his undergraduate studies, Yahir aspires to pursue a dual degree in Law and Public Policy. His ultimate goal is to build a career in public service in Kansas, where he hopes to give back to the community that has shaped him with its character and commitment to service.

Yahir is eager to expand his understanding of policymaking and legislative procedures and its impact on Latinx communities while enhancing his research skills as a CHCI Intern. His goal is to develop more effective and inclusive policies that will benefit his community in the future.
