Gabriella Detrick is from fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. Raised in a multiracial family, Gabriella learned early how identity shapes people’s experiences. She is a student at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she studies Political Science and International Affairs. After earning her Master’s in Public Policy, Gabriella aspires to work as a policy analyst at the Export Administration Directorate in the U.S. Department of Commerce, where she will review export applications and ensure that U.S. exports do not contribute to violence and rights abuses abroad.

Gabriella is driven by understanding people and the issues impacting them. Through her undergraduate research grant, she’s interviewing college students to learn how freedom of speech impacts their sense of belonging. As a writing tutor and outgoing Chief of Staff of her student government, she has enjoyed helping students find thir voices. She is also a sister of Lambda Phi Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.

During her internship with the Nevada Legislature, Gabriella helped advance AB 176, the Right to Contraception Act, and shared her experience with PCOS to advocate for reproductive healthcare access. Beyond academia, Gabriella is a spoken word poet and runs The Mixed Kids Club, a social media space where multiracial individuals can celebrate identity and shared experiences.

As a Truman Scholar, Gabriella is committed to a career in public service rooted in listening, research, and advocacy. Through CHCI, she hopes to deepen her understanding of preventing harm through policymaking and translate lived experiences into effective public policy.
