Nicolas “Nico” Upegui was born and raised in North Providence, Rhode Island, by Colombian American parents who immigrated to the U.S. as children. As the son of educators, he understands the crucial role education plays in society’s growth. As a brother of someone with Down syndrome, he recognizes the need for care and advocacy for all, having even spearheaded disability nondiscrimination legislation for organ transplants in Rhode Island.
A student at Yale University, Nico is studying Cognitive Science and obtaining a certificate in Education Studies. Through his work at Yale, he aims to develop the research skills and understanding of cognition necessary to inform educational structures and policy, particularly in urban communities. Nico is deeply committed to giving back to his community, particularly through his passion for teaching and mentoring. He has tutored students through various programs, including Project Goal, Brown’s Translational Neuroscience Outreach Program, and Yale’s Urban Improvement Corps, helping students from marginalized communities grow and develop as critical thinkers. Outside of his educational endeavors, Nico also connects with his community through music. As a Producer and Head of Music at Yale’s 17o1 Records, he has returned home to teach a music production program at his former middle school.
Throughout his time in Washington, DC as a CHCI Intern, Nico looks forward to expanding his understanding of the federal legislative process and learning from today’s Latine leaders. He hopes to apply these experiences to create meaningful change and uplift his community.
