Congressional Intern, Presented by Charter Communications

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

School: George Washington University

Major: Political Science

Placement: Office of Rep. Joaquin Castro

Axcel Sanchez is a first-generation Mexican-American born in Dallas, Texas, and raised by Mexican parents who immigrated to the United States in hopes of a better life. From a young age, he worked alongside his father in construction, an experience that exposed him to balancing the physical demands of blue-collar labor while pursuing an education. Despite growing up in an environment where college was never guaranteed, Axcel remained determined to defy expectations. His upbringing fueled a desire to pursue higher education, not just for himself, but to uplift the Latino community.

That drive led him to The George Washington University, where he is studying Political Science with a concentration in Latin American studies. As Director of Events for the Organization of Latin American Students, Axcel led a successful campaign to increase the presence of the Latino community on campus, post-COVID. He hopes to enter the U.S. Foreign Service to advance the mission of U.S. diplomacy in Latin America, serve his country, and be a voice for Latino communities in spaces where they remain deeply underrepresented.

Through his internship at CHCI, Axcel hopes to gain experience in U.S. foreign policy within the legislative process, particularly concerning the Western Hemisphere, where decisions are often made without input from those directly impacted. He aims to increase Latino representation in foreign policy and use this experience to help other aspiring Latino students break into this space through the federal workforce or in Congress.
