Esmeralda was born and raised in Southwest Detroit by two parents that immigrated from Jalisco, Mexico. She is the oldest daughter of four, as a first-generation college student, she strived to become a role model for the rest of her hermanitos. Esmeralda is currently a rising senior at Georgetown University majoring in Government and minoring in Spanish. For the first two years at Georgetown, she worked for the Social Justice Center as an English tutor for students in the DC area who have immigrant parents or are second-generation. At Georgetown, she is the secretary for MEChA de Georgetown where she works towards creating a safe space for Latinx students in this PWI. She currently aspires to attend law school to ultimately become an immigration lawyer in Detroit.
As a CHCI Intern, Esmeralda aspires to acquire a further understanding of policy and its day-to-day consequences. Being able to work on the hill exposes me to a faster-paced environment that would allow me to adapt to these standards to make her a good advocate for my community.
