Sofia was born in a small neighborhood in Hialeah, Florida, and raised by her parents that are from La Havana, Cuba. As a first-generation college student, her goals consist of serving as a role model for BIPOC youth and giving back to her community. On-campus, she has worked with La Casita Community Center as the Content Specialist working closely with low-income Latine families. Sofia’s dedication and love for her family and community have always been her driving force to follow her dreams.
Sofia is currently a sophomore at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York majoring in Communication and Rhetorical Studies with an emphasis on Government and Politics, as well as a double-minor in Child & Family Policy and Creative Writing. After completion of her undergraduate degree, Sofia hopes to obtain a Master’s degree in Public Policy with an emphasis on Nonprofit management and social issues. Her ultimate career goal would be to work for the United States government focusing on social justice policy.
As a CHCI Intern, Sofia hopes to broaden her understanding of the administrative tasks within government, as well as gain insight into the specifics of policy implementation. With the hopes of having the ability to create change within her community and make her family proud.
