Carlos was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico to a Puerto Rican mother and a Cuban, immigrant father. At the young age of 5, Carlos and his family, consisting of his two parents and two older siblings, moved to Irmo, South Carolina to pursue new economic opportunities. Being one of very few Hispanic children in his community, Carlos grew to understand the value of diversity, and developed a passion for learning about people’s identities. Seeing firsthand the work and struggles of his parents, Carlos understands the importance of hard work and seeks to constantly push himself to excel, achieve his goals, and help others.
Carlos majored in International Studies and Economics at the University of South Carolina, with a minor in Geography. He has special interests in environmental policy, sustainable development, global cooperation, and political ecology. To this end, beginning in August of 2024, Carlos will be pursuing an Erasmus Mundus joint master’s degree in Global Environment and Development at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Warsaw. Carlos strives to continue developing himself as a global leader who values multiple perspectives in tackling international issues. His ultimate career goals are to work in the field of international sustainable development, assisting in the formation of policy and programs, which improve the lives of people around the world and combat climate change.
Through CHCI, Carlos hopes to learn more about his professional interests, the legislative process, and the various impacts Congress can have.
