Hometown: La Puente, California
School: University of California, Berkeley
Major: Sociology

Emily was born and raised in a small neighborhood in the San Gabriel Valley by her mother and father who immigrated to the United States from Mexico. She is the only girl, and the youngest of four brothers. Emily’s father always stressed the importance of furthering her education, and when he passed away in 2017, she promised him that she would never give up on her aspirations and dream of attending college. She is now the first person in her family to attend a four-year university. Emily prides herself on being a role model for her niece and nephews, and strives to make her family proud.
Emily is majoring in Sociology with a minor in Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. On campus, she is heavily involved with the Latine community through her research work and various organizations. She also values her role as a student caseworker for the ASUC Legal Clinic, where she does legal research and files taxes for free for the Bay Area community. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Emily hopes to obtain her Juris Doctor’s degree. Her ultimate goal is to be an immigration or medical malpractice attorney and open her own business.
While in Washington, DC for her CHCI internship, Emily hopes to gain insight into the policy implementation process, as well as strengthen her knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system. She hopes to be able to use this knowledge to make a difference in her community and to be the voice she wishes people like her parents had growing up.
