Gizel Gomez was born and raised in the small town of Hatch, New Mexico, where agriculture is prevalent. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico at a young age. Growing up, Gizel also would wake up at 3:00am with her parents working in the onion and chile fields. The harsh working conditions were part of her motivation to attend college and give back to her community.
Gizel is pursuing a degree in Nursing with a minor in Spanish, and is currently part of the College Assistance Migrant program at the University of New Mexico. Once she completes her undergraduate degree, Gizel plans to become a pediatric nurse and provide children and their parents with the assistance they need. Her goal is to use her bilingualism and education to provide access for monolingual Spanish-speakers who often struggle to navigate the healthcare system.
As a first-generation student, Gizel plans to be an agent of change in Hatch and represent her raza in healthcare. Through CHCI, she would like to gain insight into the policy-making process and the prioritization of issues such as healthcare access to marginalized populations and how it is being addressed. She hopes to use this experience to aid her future endeavors and advocate for her Latino community.
