Iris was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and raised in Allentown, PA by her parents who immigrated to the United States from Oaxaca, Mexico. Her parents always told her that a good education was the key to moving up in the world, however when Iris got to college, she learned about the various inequities and barriers that exist that impede people, especially those from marginalized communities from achieving their educational goals. This sparked her passion to work toward educational equity.
Iris is a recent graduate from The Pennsylvania State University, who studied Education and Public Policy as well as minored in Psychology and Social Justice in Education. During her undergraduate career, Iris held various leadership positions on campus, including working at the admissions office where she got to create and facilitate programs catered to marginalized students interested in the university.
As a CHCI Intern, Iris hopes to increase her knowledge regarding the legislative process and all it encompasses. Iris also hopes to get a feel for the political atmosphere, as this will be an influential experience for her career trajectory.
