Jhonny was born in Sarasota, Florida to Guatemalan parents. He is the eldest of three, having two other sisters. Growing up in a family that values hard work and education, Jhonny has always felt a strong sense of responsibility to be a role model and pave the way for his younger siblings. He is a rising junior and first-generation college student currently attending American University in Washington, DC, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration and Education Policy.
Jhonny has a passion to pursue a career in education equity and Hispanic student advancement. This stems from his personal experiences and that of his community which did not have access to resources, information, and support to achieve higher education. Recognizing the privilege of his educational opportunities, he is committed to closing the gap in Latino representation in higher education. He has been actively involved in local community programs such as DC Reads and UnidosNow, where he has worked to support educational initiatives for underrepresented students like himself.
In the future, Jhonny hopes to work in government or research initiatives. He aims to research and implement effective policy and change on education systems to benefit the first-generation and Hispanic communities that he comes from. As a CHCI intern, Jhonny hopes to gain valuable skills in research and legislative areas, as well as networking opportunities to maximize his contributions to his Hispanic community at home, in DC, and nationwide.
