Lauren Madison was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. As a young Afro-Latina growing up in Kansas, Lauren learned from a young age that representation can play an important role in a person’s life. Rarely did she see or interact with others who shared her cultural background. To help change this experience for others, Lauren volunteers as a Student Researcher at Wichita State University with Alce Su Voz (Speak Out), an organization whose mission is to improve health equity for Spanish and Indigenous-language speakers in Kansas. Lauren is also a National Hispanic Merit Scholar, and a recipient of the Milburn Scholarship for promising youth.
A student at Wichita State University, Lauren is working towards her degree in Integrated Marketing Communication with an Honors Track in Law & Public Policy. She is also pursuing a double minor in Spanish and Linguistics. After graduation, Lauren plans to attend law school to become a civil rights attorney. She hopes to one day work for the American Civil Liberties Union to honor and represent those who have felt unheard and overlooked.
Within her time with CHCI, Lauren aspires to broaden her horizons and learn new paths to serve, lead, and be an agent of change to help others. The legislative processes of our country and Congress are complex, but powerful. Lauren hopes to better learn how these items work together to benefit all people and to aid in that process as an active and informed citizen.
