Roberto was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, as the sixth and youngest member of a family headed by an Afro-Cuban immigrant. As a first-generation college student, he understands the importance of continued education. Growing up, he witnessed his immigrant father working tirelessly to support his wife and four children. Roberto aspires to be successful and demonstrate to his father the value of his years of labor.
Roberto is a student at Michigan State University studying English with a concentration in Creative Writing. During his first year, he became involved in various student organizations, including the Creative Writing Club, Latino Leaders in Policy, and served as Treasurer for the National Council of Teachers of English. Professionally, Roberto worked for the Associated Students of Michigan State University, the undergraduate student government, as an Emerging Leader, and was selected as a delegate to attend the Association of Big Ten Students Conference on The Hill. Additionally, he worked as a Community Engaged Scholar through the Center for Community Engaged Learning, where he received the 2023 Spartan Volunteer Service Award for completing 100 or more hours of volunteer service. In the following semester, he was honored with the Outstanding First Year Award by the Office of Cultural & Academic Transitions for his campus involvement and academic success.
Looking ahead, Roberto aspires to become an author and pursue a career in which he can help others. As a CHCI Intern, he hopes to develop his networking skills and explore his career interests in law and policy.
