Hometown: Union City, New Jersey
School: St. Paul’s School
Sophia Carranza is from Union City, New Jersey and comes from a family of Peruvian and Cuban immigrants. Her passion for community service grew from visiting her mom’s home country Peru, and seeing many families lacking the basic necessities particularly in the health care aspect. That led her to stay heavily involved in her community and in school with community service, becoming head of LatinX Affinity group and the Missionary Society. She’s worked as a translator for Stand With Me, a non profit that works to help kids with cerebral palsy and other physically debilitating conditions. Additionally, her passion in psychology and criminal justice has motivated her to pursue projects of helping youth struggling with mental health issues as well as preventing a future or continuous pattern of involvement in criminal activity.
