Desiree Sedillo was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is a proud descendant of active community members that span 15 generations old through both Pueblo and Spanish heritage. With her upbringing, Desiree understands the importance of reliance and connection to the various communities of New Mexico.

Desiree recently graduated from the University of New Mexico, where she double majored in Political Science and Chicana/o/x Studies. Within her studies, she focused on intersectional politics and social movements aiming to understand how marginalized communities use their voice to ensure equal treatment. During her undergraduate career, Desiree also worked closely with Women’s Health Care practitioners and other members to understand the impact of legislation on local communities. She further worked with other community leaders to maintain and preserve traditional medicinal practices important to Latinx and Indigenous communities. Following her internship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, Desiree desires to obtain a Master’s in Public Policy or Political Science. Her ultimate goal is to return to her community, where she can work with various programs and officials, drafting policies designed to benefit the strong and caring communities of New Mexico.

As a CHCI Intern, Desiree hopes to gather more insightful knowledge of the legislative process and other various operations on Capitol Hill. She further wishes to build her skills in policy research and writing. Through this experience, Desiree hopes to use this newfound knowledge to benefit various Latinx and Indigenous communities across the U.S.
