School: Walter L. Sickles High School
Alenlly Valenzuela, prior when asked of her own self image would most likely relay to you the words “average” or “inferior” when comparing herself to her peers. Growing up Afro-Latina in the Bronx, her family’s move to Florida promised a brighter future, yet the challenges of navigating predominantly white environments were immense. A constant internal battle raged within her: to conform or to challenge the status quo. Through the transformative experience of CHCI NextGen, she discovered a powerful truth: those without a space where their voice is not heard can create their own. CHCI NextGen ignited a spark. With a growing sense of purpose, Alenlly questioned the limitations imposed upon her and the countless others who felt similarly marginalized. Recognizing the dearth of representation in fields of power, she resolved to create a space for women of color to thrive. As she prepares to embark on her senior year, Alenlly proudly introduces the Women of Color in Law, Government, and Politics association,a testament to her unwavering commitment to empowering young women and to her belief in their potential as she does for her own. While the path to achieving her aspirations is undoubtedly arduous, Alenlly remains steadfast in her commitment to creating a space where her voice, and the voices of others, are valued and heard. With aspirations to become President of this very nation one day, Alenlly Valenzuela once still saw herself as a mere shadow, a reflection dimmed by societal expectations, lost in the shuffle. But if you were to ask her now of her own self image she will now relay to you the words “strong” and “willful”, without the need to compare herself to no one.
