Antonio Gutierrez Estrada
Current Position/Organization
CHCI-HEP-CAMP Intern
Hometown: Madison, California
School: California State University, Sacramento
Major: Public Health
Placement: U.S. Department of Education, Office of Migrant Education
Antonio was born in La Piedad, Mexico, and came to the U.S. at 4 years old. Since his arrival, migrant housing is all he has known. Thus, agriculture played a huge part in his upbringing. Every time the agricultural season comes to an end, usually during the winter season, his family is forced to migrate back to Mexico. Through excruciating hot weather, his parents work in tomato fields for long hours to provide for the family. Seeing their struggle and wanting to pave a different future for his younger siblings, Antonio became the first person in his extended family to attend college. He has a passion for giving back to his community and has demonstrated this throughout his entire life.
Antonio is currently a sophomore majoring in Public Health at California State University, Sacramento. He hopes to earn his Bachelor’s and eventually his Master’s degree. His professional goal is to become a public health policy advisor. Antonio currently works at the Dreamer Resource Center. In his position, he executes events for undocumented students and students from mixed-status families to create a welcoming and inclusive campus for students.
As a CHCI Intern, Antonio hopes to better understand how departments work on a day-to-day basis. With this experience, he hopes to advocacy skills so that he can accomplish his goal of helping his community.
