Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Major: Public Policy & Management

Elia was born in Puebla, Mexico and raised in the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles, California. As a first-generation immigrant, Elia understands the importance of higher education and civic engagement. On campus, Elia is committed to creating and fostering a sense of community among undocumented and Latinx students. Since her first year, she has interned with the Office of Chicano/Latino Student Affairs and served as a mentor to first-year Latinx students. Elia has also worked for the IDEAS Mentoring Program, dedicated to helping first-year undocumented students transition into college.

Elia is currently a junior at Pomona College majoring in Public Policy Analysis with a concentration in Politics. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Elia hopes to obtain a master’s degree in Public Policy to continue her public service work.

As a CHCI intern, she hopes to gain insight into the legislative process in the areas of immigration and education. Elia hopes to use this experience to empower Latinos to be more civically engaged and inspire others to pursue higher education.
