Gabriela was born and raised in Adelphi, Maryland, one of the most Latino-populated areas in the state. Her parents, Jose and Maria, migrated from El Salvador at the ages of 19 and 21, seeking a better life for their family. Being the first in her family to attend college, Gabriela understands the importance of education and the power it holds to uplift communities.
Gabriela recently graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology, as well as Government and Politics. During her time at the university, she actively participated in various student organizations, advocating for social justice and immigrant rights. Additionally, Gabriela excelled academically, demonstrating her dedication and passion for making a difference.
Gabriela has gained valuable experience as a Government Affairs intern at Ferring Pharmaceuticals in their Washington, D.C. office. This opportunity allowed her to understand the intricacies of policy-making and its impact on communities. Building upon this experience, Gabriela plans to apply to law school in the fall, with the ultimate goal of becoming an immigration lawyer. She aspires to use her legal expertise to assist individuals in her community and ensure equitable treatment for immigrants.
As a CHCI Intern, Gabriela aims to expand her knowledge of the legislative process. She recognizes that this internship will provide her with a platform to make a lasting impact on her community and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
