José Fernando was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The oldest of four siblings who look up to him. His father is a self-employed lawyer, working with Puerto Rican and American small business owners. His mother is a trained pharmacist but is currently his father’s administrative assistant and raising his siblings. José Fernando’s parents have always encouraged him to study whatever he wants and have supported him in his academic and professional endeavors.

José Fernando is currently a Senior at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras majoring in Political Science with an emphasis in Government and International Relations. During his undergraduate degree, he has worked as a legislative intern in his state legislature and has participated in the Córdova Fernós Program in Washington, DC. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, José Fernando hopes to obtain a Juris Doctor in the University of Puerto Rico’s Law School as well as obtain a master’s degree in public policy. His ultimate career goal would be working in the Puerto Rico state government, starting out as a legislative assistant, and eventually seeking office as an elected official, working in the areas of mental health, transportation infrastructure, and urban development.

As a CHCI Intern, José Fernando hopes to strengthen his knowledge of the legislative process, as well as gain insight on U.S.-style public administration. He hopes to be able to use this experience as a way to bring back this knowledge to Puerto Rico and begin implementing change while serving his community.
