Jose Luis Avila III is a third-and-higher generation Mexican-American who fully embraces the roots and richness of his culture. Being a proud Chicano shapes his identity where he understands the significance of an engaged, diverse, and united community. Jose Luis carries a committment to justice rooted in his passion for servant leadership. He understands that empathy and empowerment for marginalized and oppressed communities drive a moral obligation for meaningful and inclusive change. As President of his school’s Latino affinity space, Hermanos Unidos, leader of the Advocacy Club, inaugural member of the Equity and Inclusion Committee, and Student Leadership Team to name a few, Jose Luis strives to foster a society that supports all. Jose Luis applied to CHCI NextGen to further understand top issues that face the Latino community today, what it means to be a leader, and how he can foster positive change for and with his community.
