Isiah Guzman is a student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, pursuing a degree in History with a minor in Spanish. Born and raised in Omaha, he graduated from Omaha North High School and was shaped by a community rooted in hard work, resilience, and integrity. His father is from Querétaro, Mexico, and his mother is the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, grounding his perspective in both cultural heritage and lived experience.
Through his upbringing, Isiah developed an awareness of structural inequalities affecting low-income communities, particularly in access to education, healthcare, and quality of life. These experiences led him to pursue law and public service. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Isiah serves as Vice President of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc., Beta Omega Chapter, and participated in Mock Trial for two years, strengthening his interest in legal advocacy. He also interned with the Nebraska Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee, gaining insight into policymaking and its impact on local communities.
Isiah plans to attend law school and pursue a career as a civil rights attorney, focusing on discrimination, educational equity, and economic access. He is particularly interested in how historical inequalities shape modern law and in using litigation and policy to create lasting structural change.
As a CHCI Intern, Isiah hopes to deepen his understanding of the legislative process and analyze how historical inequalities inform the development of federal law and policy, while developing the skills necessary to advocate for underserved communities.
