JOSE GUEVARA JOHNSON

Jose is a Salvadoran immigrant raised in northeast Los Angeles. His civic engagement started young when he was selected to be part of Camp Coca-Cola in middle school. In this four-year program, he spends his summers in Wyoming, learning what it means to be a leader for his community. As a DACA recipient and the first of his family to attend California State University, navigating higher education exposed him to the misconceptions and challenges of being an immigrant.
As such, Jose organized the enrollment of undocumented students in his freshman year. Becoming the first DACAmented peer mentor advisor at California State University, Los Angeles, to serve undocumented students. His advocacy centers on his struggles with health equity, immigration, and human rights. In 2019, Jose spent his spring semester as CHCI’s intern for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office. He graduated from California State University, Los Angeles, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He is currently working as an academic advisor full-time in his east Los Angeles community.
