Karla was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic. She immigrated to the United States with her family when she was ten years old in search of treatment for her younger brother’s medical condition. Being raised by two hard-working parents, Karla understands the importance of pursuing higher education and giving back to the community that gave so much to her. While on campus, she is the President of ALIANZA, the first and only organization on campus dedicated to uplifting and advancing the Afro-Latin community. Karla is also a founding sister and current President of the Eta Eta Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc.
Karla is currently a senior at George Washington University, double majoring in Political Science and Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychological and Brain Sciences. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, she plans to attend law school and attain a Juris Doctor degree. Although Karla is still unsure which type of law she will pursue, she is sure she will use it to advance the lives of the most underrepresented. Karla’s ultimate career goal is to work in a law firm and use her education to guide others who were once in her shoes.
As a CHCI Intern, Karla hopes to advance her knowledge of the legislative process while learning directly from public servants. She hopes to use this experience to make lasting contributions to her community and further advance her political and professional career.
