Placement: The Office of Rep. Jamie Raskin

Melissa was born and raised in Maryland alongside her two older sisters, by her mother who immigrated from Nicaragua. From a young age, her family instilled the importance of education and the power of knowledge because of the immense opportunities they open.

Melissa is currently a first-generation senior at Towson University, where she is double majoring in Political Science and Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. On-campus, Melissa has worked with student success programs as a student mentor, mentoring first-year students transition to college. At TU, Melissa has also served as President of the Latin American Student Organization. In support of abortion rights, Melissa has interned for advocacy organizations NARAL pro-choice Maryland chapter and EMILY’s List.

As a CHCI Intern, Melissa aspires to gain a better understanding of the legislative process and the Latinx community around the country. She aims to use this experience in developing her skill to better advocate change and inspire others to do the same.
