Born and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, Samantha Fernández is a first-generation Ecuadorian student whose upbringing in one of New York City’s most diverse immigrant communities has deeply shaped her commitment to advocacy and public service. Growing up surrounded by migrant families, Samantha has always been involved in giving back, particularly by supporting immigrant communities navigating complex legal and social systems. These early experiences instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility to uplift and advocate for those around her.
Samantha is currently a student at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations, where she studies Industrial and Labor Relations with minors in Business and Law and Society. On campus, she is actively involved in the Cornell Law School Immigration Law and Advocacy Clinic, where she contributes to Know-Your-Rights initiatives and supports immigrant communities through outreach and advocacy. At home, she has continued this commitment by working with local families and community-based organizations to expand access to resources and information. Through her academic and professional experiences, Samantha has developed a strong interest in the intersection of labor, law, and immigration. She aspires to attend law school and become an immigration attorney, with the goal of expanding access to justice for underserved communities like the one that raised her.
As a CHCI Intern, Samantha hopes to strengthen her knowledge of the legislative process and gain insight into immigration policy. She hopes to use this experience to make a meaningful difference in her community and inspire others to do the same.
