Sebastian Perez-Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Miami, Florida, in a Cuban immigrant household shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and a strong sense of community. Growing up in a city defined by diaspora, he developed an early awareness of the political and economic forces that shape migration and opportunity, sparking his interest in law and public policy.
At Yale University, Sebastian is double-majoring Political Science, with a focus on comparative politics, and Spanish. He serves as External President of the Yale Undergraduate Legal Aid Association, where he helps lead initiatives that support justice-impacted individuals through legal research, public education, and advocacy. He is also involved with the Cuban American Undergraduate Student Association, engaging with Yale’s Cuban community and diaspora.
Sebastian’s passion for advocacy began in high school, where he served as a Youth Defense Attorney for the Miami-Dade County Teen Court representing misdemeanor cases. He also founded his school’s Spanish Honor Society, creating spaces to support Hispanic students and promote cultural engagement. Looking ahead, he hopes to pursue a career in law and public policy focused on advancing equity and opportunity for underserved communities.
As a CHCI Intern, Sebastian hopes to deepen his understanding of the legislative process and gain the tools necessary to advocate for meaningful policy change at the national level, particularly in the areas of immigration and human rights.
