Hometown: Los Angeles, California
School: Georgetown University
Major: Science, Technology, and International Affairs
Placement: Office of Rep. Jimmy Gomez

Mariela Cruz-Suarez was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, by her parents, who immigrated to the United States from Honduras and Mexico. As a first-generation college student, she draws motivation from her family’s sacrifices and is committed to making the most of every opportunity she encounters.

Mariela is currently a student at Georgetown University studying Science, Technology, and International Affairs, with a focus on environmental and sustainability science. On campus, Mariela is a member of Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Georgetown, where she deepens her connection to her cultural heritage. She also works as a product analyst, collaborating with companies to improve user experience, and is developing a wildfire science education curriculum in partnership with National Geographic through Kaminos, a STEM education nonprofit she co-founded. Mariela is passionate about environmental justice and education equity, particularly in underserved communities. She is especially interested in how citizen science can empower communities to better understand and respond to environmental risks.

In the future, Mariela plans to attend law school and pursue a career in environmental or technology law. As a CHCI Intern, Mariela hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process and how to effectively integrate scientific knowledge into policymaking. Her long-term goal is to contribute to national education initiatives and eventually become a professor.
