Julieta was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Katy’s suburbs by her proud Mexican immigrant parents. Having created her volunteer-based organization in high school, Communicate a Smile, to improve the lives of elderly residents in her predominantly Latinx community. Julieta grew a keen interest in learning about and improving the systems and institutions that shape everyday life in the United States.
Julieta is currently a Junior at Columbia University, majoring in Political Science and Hispanic Studies. Besides her studies, Julieta is an Advising Fellow at Matriculate, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing college access to low-income high-achieving students. She is also a Co-Chair at Columbia’s Mentoring Initiative, where she helps Latinx first-year students adjust to life on campus. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Julieta hopes to work in the non-profit or public service sector to improve access to affordable quality healthcare and higher education in the United States and to pursue a law career.
As a CHCI Intern, Julieta hopes to strengthen her knowledge of the legislative process and gain insight into what is happening at the federal level to address issues in her community. She hopes to use this experience to have a more significant impact on future roles.
