Heidi G. Torres was born and raised in the Southwest neighborhood of La Villita in Chicago, Illinois by her parents who immigrated to the United States from Michoacán, Mexico. Being a first-generation college student has taught Heidi the importance of higher education and towards opening spaces for other marginalized communities coming after her. Heidi has various unique experiences represented through research, study abroad, music, volunteerism, and activism that reflect her values towards a just society for everyone.
Heidi studied at the University of Michigan (U-M) with a major in political science and minors in Sociology of Health and Medicine and Community Action and Social Change. At U-M, she focused on creating multicultural spaces and using volunteerism to help diverse communities fight against social injustices. Moreover, Heidi has participated in research to understand immigration in London, healthcare systems, and unemployment in the United States. Heidi hopes to pursue her future career while advocating for social justice in healthcare, immigration, and education for the Latinx and marginalized communities.
As a CHCI Intern, Heidi hopes to strengthen her skills within the legislative process and to understand the process of running for office to directly change policies. With this knowledge, she hopes to give back to the Latinx and immigrant community.
